5 Reasons Why Sitting At The Computer Can Be A Health Risk

May 13th, 2008 by katherineashtonddw

Sitting at the computer all day can pose some serious health risks. If you think that sitting doesn’t involve a lot of work think again. Although it requires less muscular effort, the muscles are required to hold the trunk, the neck and shoulders in a fixed position.

Here are 5 reasons why sitting at the computer can be a health risk and tips to help correct these problems.

1. Poor posture. Poor alignment of the head, neck, shoulder and back causes stress and pain which affects every part of your body from head to toe and it can have lasting health problems.

Support your back. The backrest should fit the natural curve of your lower back. Your feet should be planted firmly on the floor or comfortably on a footrest. Keep a comfortable shoulder and arm posture. Avoid slouching. Keep your wrists straight and avoid any up, down or side way movements.

2. Eye strain. Constantly staring at the monitor can cause dry or watery eyes, sore, burning or itchy eyes, blurred or double vision and headaches all contribute to eye strain. Although there is no long-term consequences, it’s rather unpleasant.

Take frequent breaks. Give your eyes a rest by focusing on something other than the monitor. You can also sit back and close your eyes for a few minutes or complete other tasks. Blinking lubricates the eye, so blink more often.

Place the monitor at least at arm’s length. Make sure the top of the screen is at eye level so you’re not straining to look up or down. Reduce unnecessary glare and check your lighting. The worst problems comes from overhead lighting or from behind. Dust on the monitor may contribute to glare and reflection problems. Lastly, adjust the contrast and brightness on the monitor that is comfortable for you.

3. Poor circulation. Prolonged sitting can cause fatigue in your limbs, painful leg cramps or blood clots. Get up and move around, go for a 30 minute walk, do some light exercises or stretches for your arms, shoulders, neck, back and legs. Take a few deep breaths by inhaling slowly through the nose and exhaling through the mouth.

4. Forgetting to eat. Many people forget to eat while working on the computer. I can see why. Time just flies. Don’t skip those important meals because they give you energy and will carry you out throughout the day. If you have a daily planner, make sure you schedule a lunch break away from the computer. Drink lots of water to keep yourself hydrated.

5. Eating too much. And some people can’t stop eating. It’s like watching TV and you need something to munch on. You end up eating a lot more than necessary and thus adding extra unwanted pounds to your waistline. Eat your meals away from the computer and if you snack, make sure it’s healthy foods — raw veggies, low-fat yogurt and fruits.

How Address Label Software Has Revolutionized Business

May 12th, 2008 by katherineashtonddw

The introduction of mailing label software has helped a lot of people manage and organize information. This keeps the names and addresses of clients on file making it easier to get so that brochures and other product updates can be sent by mail.

Some companies will still prefer to type this in excel or word. It is only when the person has tried the address labeling software that one realizes that it is better than the latter.

This software was first intended for home use. The hands surely get tired writing the names and addresses for everyone when sending Christmas cards or invitations to a special event like a wedding.

Given that this is a problem that everyone faces, someone then came up with the idea of making the software program. In time, this has also been used in the office while others have used this to start a business.

It doesn’t take much to get started. The only thing needed is a computer; a printer and a CD that will cost together only around $30. The program should have various fonts, coloring and graphics to choose from so taking a little time to browse through is all it takes to find the right one.

If the user is satisfied with the draft, then it is time to print the labels. Stickered paper is much better since cutting it into smaller pieces and then using glue is quite messy.

But the address label software can also be used for other things. This can help organize the filing cabinets and the folders inside. If the employee works in a manufacturing facility, this can also be used to print barcodes.

The address labeling software is user-friendly. The person doesn’t have to attend a class to know how it works since anyone can master it through trial and error. It will really help a lot though by reading the manual that comes with the CD to be familiar with the basics of what this can do.

Address labeling software is compatible with either Windows or Macintosh. There are so many to choose from so the person can listen to what others think of it or try it out then make the judgment.

It is also possible to get the software online by paying for it using one’s credit card. Some developers even offer product updates that can also be downloaded into the computer. This will allow the user to make something new each time when sending out letters or arranging things in the office or at home.

It only takes a few minutes to do everything with the address labeling software. When the person has clicked on the printer button, the user can get up, have a cup of coffee then just wait for everything to be finished. This will surely maximize the individual’s time to be able to do other important things.

The program itself has revolutionized the way that labeling is done in the 21st century. No more alterations or throwing away paper when there is a mistake because this can be set in the machine before it starts printing away.

Address labeling software can do wonders for the person. You won’t realize the potential of what this thing can do (like saving time) unless you try it!

History of Golf in Scotland

May 11th, 2008 by katherineashtonddw

While many countries have a valid claim to an early game that resembles the game of golf, the origins of golf are without a doubt routed in Scotland’s past. The fact is, golf probably derived from other countries and stick and ball type games. However, while these are stick and ball games, they are missing that vital ingredient that is unique to golf. The hole. It was the Scots who introduced the golf hole into the game we now call golf.

Over the centuries, golf has evolved into the game it is today. The first recognizable form being played in Scotland in the early 1400’s. Andrews, Scotland is the birthplace of the game golf. Originating on the east coast of Scotland, golf quickly became the Scots’ national pastime and passion, bound forever to Scotland’s history and people.

According to Scottish lore, the people of Scotland believes that Golf was invented by Scottish fishermen to amuse themselves on the way home from fishing.

In 1457 golf was banned in Scotland because it interfered with the practice of archery, which was vital to the defense effort. The ban on golf had been issued in a time when Scotland was preparing to defend itself from the English. Scotland can say that they are the founding fathers in regards to the oldest golf course. It was in

Scotland that the passion for golf came alive. There is general agreement among historians and golf fans alike that the Scots were the first golfers who became somewhat addicted and passionate about the sport. In the very early days of golf, each golf group in Scotland produced their own and unique rules, which was sometimes the cause for interesting discussions. Golf is still a very popular game today in Scotland today.

The game of golf soon spread to areas outside of Scotland. In one form or another, the variant games of present day golf were clearly enjoyed throughout Europe in the Middle Ages. In fact in seventeenth century Dutch landscapes commonly show golf being played on ice. The game of golf began its destiny in time towards becoming popular around the world.

Sharapova Showed That She Has a Lot More to Give

May 9th, 2008 by katherineashtonddw

Maria Sharapova’s face after winning her first U.S Open trophy, Sharapova resembled a kid and not a professional player. Something unknown motivated her, and the 19 year old started jumping up and down with her prize, but her inexperience charged her, apparently she did not realized that this precious piece of hardware, unlike the platter she got for winning Wimbledon two years ago, comes in two pieces. So as expected, the top tumbled off and nicked her in the back of the head as she squeezed her eyes shut as if she was wishing to disappear.

She quickly recovered from that spontaneous moment and spent the rest of the short presentation in Arthur Ashe Stadium displaying camera. The margin between players was not that great. Henin-Hardenne who has made it to the finals in all four Grand Slams for this season and won the French Open, made several mistakes that gave Maria a room to win. She played too short, not aggressively enough and gave Sharapova too much time to put her game together.

Almost everything Sharapova does seems languid except for her searing ground strokes. Two years ago we knew she was not done, she had a lot more in her. This victory was the reward of a long preparation that have been taking place since she was a little girl. Her routine at the service line is the equivalent of a compulsive baseball player’s ritual at the plate. Now Sharapova has the right to say that her precocious victory at Wimbledon wasn’t an accident. Now all that remains to be seen is if she can handle being a champion.

Computer Obsession: Is It A Real Addiction?

May 8th, 2008 by katherineashtonddw

Psychologists disagree as to whether computer obsession is even a real addiction. Although many therapists treat “computer addiction” as a disorder, other therapists claim that computer obsession is more like pathological gambling than a true addiction, because it involves a behavioral failure to resist an impulse and not a physical dependence upon some sort of substance.

There have been few studies on the fairly recent phenomenon of computer addiction, so there are few scientific facts to quote. However, there’s plenty of anecdotal evidence that seems to suggest that computer addiction not only exists, but may actually be close to an epidemic worldwide. Most heavy computer users are aware of their own problem or know of other people who seem to display all the symptoms of an addicted personality.

Like many drug users, computer addicts have a tendency to lose track of time when they’re online. They can spend entire days in cyberspace and not realize it. They go without sleep, they forget to eat, they stay home from work or school, and they ignore their day-to-day responsibilities, all like any other type of addict. They oftentimes find themselves wanting to get up and tend to their lives, but are unable to pull themselves away from their computer chairs.

Given the choice between the real world and the world of cyberspace, the virtual world wins.

Game Play Addiction, Email, Chat Rooms

One large factor for computer addiction involves video games. Some games in particular have notorious reputations for being difficult to walk away from, such as Doom, Lode Runner, and even the lowly game of computer Solitaire. Many colleges are now beginning to include workshops on computer addiction as part of their standard freshman orientation.

Other areas that are very difficult to ignore are email, chat rooms, and newsgroups. Many companies have recognized the potential for losing large amounts of time and are fighting back, denying employees access to the Internet, email, chats, or games while on the job.

Different from TV Watching?

Folks who aren’t convinced of the danger of computer addition point to other segments of society, especially that of television viewing, and ask if it’s any more dangerous to spend the same amount of time on a computer as sitting on the couch watching whatever is on at the moment. They say it’s not the computer that’s at fault, citing heroin addicts, who don’t blame the needle for their addiction. After all, the Internet has been a boon to humans, leveling the playing field between small towns and big cities, allowing people to work from home, and putting more information in the hands of more people than any other time in human history.

Since it’s a psychological problem and not one of substance abuse, the debate will likely continue for some time to come, especially since the World Wide Web is still a relatively new phenomenon. However, that doesn’t change the fact that thousands of students fail their classes because they’re spending too much time online and millions of productivity hours are lost every day due to employee surfing in the office.

In one final irony, if you look at your own computer habits and decide that you need to seek help as a potential computer addict, the only support groups you’re likely to find will be online.

Hypnotism For Golf

May 7th, 2008 by katherineashtonddw

Does hypnotism work for golf work? Yes, it certainly can. Do you keep ruining your golf scores by losing your cool? Maybe you are nervous on the first tee and hit a bad shot, and that gets you going downhill. Or you can’t get out of a bunker first time or just leave those critical putts short. Or maybe you have let yourself believe that you don’t play par fives well.

These things have nothing to do with your golfing ability. How do I know? Because I have been there, done that. You know as well as I do that you can then go onto the driving range and hit your ‘normal’ shot, or you can hole the same putt on the practice green.

At least half of golf is in your mind

Yes, it is all in the mind, and the problem is caused by fear. You might not think it is fear, but might admit to anxiety. The anxiety may be that the fairway is narrow, that you are playing with people who you are think are better golfers than you, or just that you don’t know them. Anxiety is just a minor form of fear. And it is not needed.

You know that, but every so often that little voice will come up and say: “You won’t get that putt” or “This is a really difficult bunker shot, why did I thin that shot into here. Now I’m in trouble.”

Get in the zone with self-hypnosis

You can talk yourself out of these things, but it is much easier if you can get into the zone before the shot. The zone is when you are concentrating exactly on what you are doing, you are calm and relaxed, holding the club lightly, and just seeing the ball, and thinking about where you are hitting it - and you are not thinking about the lake on the left and the big bunker on the right. You are seeing the middle of the fairway. You take the club back slowly, let it accelerate through the ball, thinking about where it is going. You can do this with hypnosis for golf.

Most of us can do this from time to time - maybe you remember the day you played that great round, and everything just went right. With hypnosis for golf you can learn to do it all the time - every shot you play. Will you still get those self-doubting sentences forming in your mind? Occasionally, but now you can talk them down with something like: “I hole putts like this all the time, it is just one more easy putt” or “I hit the ball straight, there is plenty of fairway”. The you put yourself in the zone.

Hypnosis download or CD

What do you have to do to get the benefit of hypnosis? The best way is to get a hypnosis download or CD that will take you through a series of situations so you learn how to be very relaxed and then how to apply that to every shot you play. At first, you will find that you cannot do it all the time, but suddenly you will hit a shot - drive, approach, chip or putt - when you know you are really in the zone.

With time you will find that you can get in the zone for each shot and your game will improve by leaps and bounds. One word of warning: you will need to hit the ball properly to start with. If you slice every shot out to the rough on the right on every hole, you need some help with your swing. Even so, hypnosis for golf really will help you improve your game.

USB and IEEE 1394

May 6th, 2008 by katherineashtonddw

USB

USB is a serial interface technology intended to replace existing serial and parallel ports. The advantages of USB technology are increased interface speed, full Plug and Play support, and the ability to create a network of serial devices off a single serial port.

USB is a cable bus that supports data exchange between a host computer and a range of simultaneously accessible peripherals. The attached peripherals share USB bandwidth through a host-scheduled, token-based protocol. The bus allows peripherals to be attached, configured, used, and detached while the host and other peripherals are operating. This ability is referred to as dynamic (or hot) attachment and removal. USB is a low cost, simple, powerful solution to the input/output (I/O) problem.

Understanding USB Versions

Windows® XP originally released with support for USB 1.1 controllers and devices. These devices supported low-speed and full-speed operation at 1.5 and 12 Mbps, respectively.

USB 2.0 provides support for the above two speeds, as well as for high-speed operation at 480 Mbps. Because USB 2.0 supports all these transfer rates, USB 2.0 is not the same as high-speed USB. Only devices with the USB 2.0 Hi-Speed logo support the 480 Mbps rate.

Limitations: The following limitations exist with USB and should be considered when troubleshooting issues with USB devices:

Bus-powered hubs cannot be plugged into other bus-powered hubs. A bus-powered hub is one which does not have its own power source.

Devices requiring a large amount of bus power cannot be plugged into bus-powered hubs.

Cable segment lengths between any device, hub, or host controller is limited to no more than 5 meters.

The USB 1.1 specification limits the number of simultaneously connected devices to 127. Several self-powered hubs connected to each of the root hubs may be required to get this number of devices.

The Complete Horde Leveling Guide?

May 4th, 2008 by katherineashtonddw

I have a confession to make. As a World of Warcraft player, sometimes it can be seen as a sign of weakness to get outside help. That is why I am a little embarrassed to say that I picked up Joanas Horde Leveling Guide. I had heard good things about this guide with many people saying it was the most complete horde leveling guide around. I doubted their claims, but finally found myself checking it out more and more. Temptation overwhelmed me and I gave in. So what did I think of Joanas Horde Leveling Guide? Is it the complete horde leveling guide that everyone says it is?

Joanas Horde Leveling Guide was written by Joana or Mancow as others know him. He has set records on multiple servers for being the fastest to reach level 60. After checking out his horde leveling guide, I know why. Not only does the guide go indepth with how to power level a horde character, Joana also provides video support of his journey. I was able to watch him go from 0-60 as if I was looking over his shoulder while he was playing. The video quality is very good. Having the videos alone would justify picking up Joanas Horde Leveling Guide, but I kept finding more and more good stuff inside. Joana broke down the quest for each horde race. Someone starting as an Orc, like myself, would get just as much use out of the guide as someone that wanted to start as an Undead or Tauren. Joanas guide also has a section for the new Blood Elf race as well. It was recently updated with Burning Crusade information covering levels 60-70.

Needless to say, I have been very impressed with Joanas Horde Leveling Guide. While I am still a little anxious about announcing that I am using it, I feel the value it adds makes it the best WoW Horde Leveling Guide available. It tops other Horde Leveling Guides by providing amazing detail in terms of quests and leveling tips. There are also specific tips for the hunter class as well.

Joanas Horde Leveling Guide is the most complete Horde Leveling Guide available to date. I wish I had picked it up sooner. My Horde leveling is going faster than ever before thanks to this guide.

Still trying to level that Horde character? Check out WoW Horde Leveling
