How to Save Ink and Money

Friday, May 23rd, 2008

There are several ways that you can save money on the cost of printer cartridges.

The first thing that you can do is to print in draft quality if you are just printing the document for yourself, to proof read or if your kids are just playing. This will print everything in low quality and pictures in black and white. Therefore, this will save you loads of ink in your colour cartridges. This can be done easily enough. All you have to do is go into the printer driver on your pc, select printing preferences, and in there, there will be the draft printing option. There may also be other options in your printer driver set-up that may not be as low quality as draft printing, but that could save ink as well instead of printing in full quality. Printing in draft will also be very fast as there is less ink put onto the paper. Therefore, if you are printing large document on you inkjet printer then this certainly a good option for you.

The next thing you can do is to re-fill your own printer cartridges after they have ran out. There are plenty of shops out there who will sell you refill kits. However, this can be kind of messy. You have to use a syringe to fill up the cartridges. When I tried the ink went all over the desk. It may be worth doing this over a sink or have plenty of paper around to mop up the mess. Another way of getting your cartridges re-filled is to take them to a printer cartridge re-filling outlet. They seem to be in most towns and cities presently, so finding one would not be hard. However, be careful which outlet you choose as some of them can be as dear as buying the originals.

Another option to save money is to buy compatible or re-manufactured printer cartridges. Compatible cartridges are new cartridges that have been made by manufacturers other than the printer manufacturer. These cartridges will fit your printer. All the parts in the cartridges are brand new and the cartridges are filled with high quality ink. This could reduce printing cost of up to 70 percent. Re-manufactured cartridges are original manufacturers printer cartridges that have only been used once then sent away to be dismantled and then cleaned, put back together and professionally re-filled and re-packaged.

The final way that you could reduce the cost of printing and always use original manufactures cartridges is by selling your used, original cartridges back to be re-manufactured. Cartridge brokers will buy original cartridges and then re-sell them back to companies that will process them and re-manufacture them.

Whatever method of saving money and ink you choose, remember to consider what is the right option for you. What will suit one person, will not always necessarily suit another. Try them out and see if they can benefit you.

Quality Cartridges opens up a world of cheap compatible printer cartridges for all you ink needs. Find out how much money you could save by visiting quality-cartridges

How to Deal With Wireless Encryption Security Threats

Wednesday, May 21st, 2008

Because nobody wants to compromise the integrity of their network by having some hacker “borrow” your bandwidth or gain access and start snooping around you need to lock down your network. Fortunately, encryption is built into wireless technology; it’s simply a matter knowing how to turn it on.

Wired Equivalent Privacy (WEP) or WiFi Protected Access (WPA) The good news is that wireless technology does have pre-built security but the bad news is there’s a flaw in that security. The problem lies in the fact that it’s been built upon two completely incompatible standards with the result being that it’s a pain in the “you know what” to set up a whole network to use encryption.

Like most new technologies it starts out using a certain standard and then as the technology evolves better ways are developed that make the original technology obsolete. Flaws are also exposed in the original standard that make it less desirable. Problems then develop as business and individuals scramble to transition from the old to the new because during the transition there’s always equipment and devices that use the old technology and the differences usually cause compatibility issues.

WEP was the original standard for encryption over 802.11 wireless networks but in 2001 a research paper was published entitled: “Weaknesses in the Key Scheduling Algorithm of RC4″ which demonstrated critical flaws in the security of WEP that made it rather simple for someone with reasonable know how to break it and have access to someone’s network.

In a nutshell, WEP made it too easy to discover its’ secret key and once you have the key; you can hack in and stay for as long as you want. Owners quickly recognized that it was virtually useless to use WEP on their networks but by the time the industry discovered the security flaw the WEP method was built into almost every piece of wireless equipment made.

Clearly, the WEP standard had to be replaced and in 2003 WPA was introduced and fortunately it fixed most of its predecessor’s flaws. WPA is much more secure than WEP. Unfortunately, WPA took a long time to reach the market and WPA devices were rather expensive when first released. As a result, WEP was and still is the default in a high percentage of the software being used because it’s supported by more devices. Now you can see why we find ourselves in the confused situation we are today.

WPA is the Here and Now

If you plan on to enable encryption, always use WPA. Any devices purchased after 2003 should be WPA compatible because the upgrade was made a mandatory part of the standard.

Without a doubt WEP is better than nothing because it will; at least, deter the casual intruder, who won’t try anything more than double-clicking to gain access to your network. In addition, WEP can also make you less of a target for wardrivers because there’s so many completely open networks that are even easier targets than those using WEP that they simply access them. However, it’s silly to use WEP nowadays (post 2003) when WPA is so easily available.

Encryption - Turning It On

Actually turning on encryption in Windows is fairly easy. The problem isn’t complexity it’s time or aggravation because it does involve a fair amount of clicking which is probably why so few people bother.

Step one is to turn on encryption for your wireless router or access point. The exact method will vary between devices but you can usually do it by visiting the router or access point’s configuration page in your web browser, find the encryption settings and then choosing WPA. If you have any trouble, refer to your manual.

Once you’ve done that, you’ll need to change the encryption settings on your computers. Open the “View Available Wireless Networks” screen by right-clicking on your wireless connection (bottom right of your screen) and selecting it from the menu that appears. Next, click “Change advanced settings” go to the Wireless Networks section and click your network’s name and then click Properties.

Next, where it says “Network authentication” select WPA and click OK on everything you’ve opened. Really not that bad but then again, that’s not the fun part. The fun comes when you get to do this for “every computer on your network”. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news but grab a latte, put your feet up and start clicking.

Easier for New Networks

As you can see, the process is your basic “pain in buns” for existing networks but fortunately it’s much easier for networks that have not been set up. You still need to turn on encryption at the wireless router or access point but once you’ve done that you can set up encryption using the Wireless Network Setup Wizard.

You’ll have to ask Mr. Gates about this one but for some reason Windows still turns on WEP by default when you set up your wireless network. What this means is that each time you go through the wizard, you’ll need to remember to check the box on the third screen that says “Use WPA encryption instead of WEP”. A pain, but it’s still easier than changing the settings manually down the road.

Switching Broadband Suppliers - Getting More Bang For Your Buck - Part One

Sunday, May 18th, 2008

These days most households have the Internet with most of them getting a DSL line or Broadband for their homes. Broadband suppliers are like electricity suppliers, over the years the range of competitors all vying for your business has grown massively. In a test with one postcode I was able to find seven different broadband suppliers in my area, all offering different packages and extras for different prices depending on however much I wanted to spend per month.

Broadband is provided under contracts similar to Mobile Phone contracts, they tend to be 12 month agreements after which you can carry on with your supplier or make the jump to another, a lot of the time with contracts like this people have an overwhelming feeling of apathy and stick with their current supplier to avoid any hassle, providers rely on this to retain your business and you could get better deals elsewhere if you looked around.

This guide is going to go through what to look for if you have had enough with your current supplier and want to explore pastures new, however if you’re happy with your service then it is still worth reading on as you never know you may find an area where you could save money or get a bit extra from your provider.

How fast are we going?

First of all you should consider how fast your connection is at the moment, this can be done by using an online Broadband speed test, these websites get two figures: your upload speed and download speed, the latter normally being considerably larger than the former. It’s the download speed which is normally referenced in the adverts and brochures of the speed you can expect when you sign up.

Now the number you get back may be vastly different from the advertised speed, say you signed up for a speedy 8MB speed connection it isn’t uncommon for the download speed to actually be less than half of that number. Before you go complaining to your supplier there’s no point, whilst they are not exactly clear if you look at the detail it says “up to” before the stated speeds, a nasty trick you’ll probably think especially if you never actually get the full fat speed you pay for.

The reason for this is that the distance you are from the local telephone exchange affects the strength of your signal, as well as other factors such as the quality of the cabling in your area, the majority of internet cabling in the UK is still copper wiring which can lose signal strength over distance and time. The UK telecommunication companies such as Virgin Media are trying to get new Fibre-Optic cabling rolled out over the country to reduce the degradation in speed and allow for even faster broadband.

How much power is too much power?

As well as checking how fast your connection is, before you commit to a particular package you should consider how much speed you will actually need, whilst there are £50/month packages offering upwards of 10MB speeds you may find that for your household you won’t actually need that much speed and could make a valuable saving by selecting a lower speed.

The majority of UK households only use the Internet to check emails, social networking sites and bid on EBay a little. An entry level connection of 2MB would be more than sufficient for this, it could even handle two or three computers through a wireless router as long as all three aren’t being used for prolonged periods of time or for more bandwidth hungry services like file sharing or online gaming.

The higher end connections are more suited to so-called “power users” the type of people who download music and videos a lot as well as people who have lots of machines on their home networks. People who play online games like Internet Poker or World of Warcraft are more likely to need a speedy connection, as well as the growing number of games consoles that connect to the internet like the Xbox 360 and Playstation 3.

By now you should have a good idea of how fast your current connection is (if you already have one) and have a better understanding of what speed you need, at this point you should know whether you need more or less speed and have your first criteria for when you want to look at the many suppliers on comparison sites or when looking at the broadband suppliers brochures. The next part of this guide will cover the actual usage of your Internet, the customer services for when/if your service drops and discuss cheap broadband package deals where you could save money by getting your telephone, TV and Broadband all from one supplier.

If you are looking for cheap broadband whether you have an existing provider or not then you can compare broadband deals online. Also if you are thinking about changing your supplier then check your connection using one of the various broadband speed test websites to see whether you are getting your money’s worth.

5 Reasons Why Sitting At The Computer Can Be A Health Risk

Tuesday, May 13th, 2008

Sitting at the computer all day can pose some serious health risks. If you think that sitting doesn’t involve a lot of work think again. Although it requires less muscular effort, the muscles are required to hold the trunk, the neck and shoulders in a fixed position.

Here are 5 reasons why sitting at the computer can be a health risk and tips to help correct these problems.

1. Poor posture. Poor alignment of the head, neck, shoulder and back causes stress and pain which affects every part of your body from head to toe and it can have lasting health problems.

Support your back. The backrest should fit the natural curve of your lower back. Your feet should be planted firmly on the floor or comfortably on a footrest. Keep a comfortable shoulder and arm posture. Avoid slouching. Keep your wrists straight and avoid any up, down or side way movements.

2. Eye strain. Constantly staring at the monitor can cause dry or watery eyes, sore, burning or itchy eyes, blurred or double vision and headaches all contribute to eye strain. Although there is no long-term consequences, it’s rather unpleasant.

Take frequent breaks. Give your eyes a rest by focusing on something other than the monitor. You can also sit back and close your eyes for a few minutes or complete other tasks. Blinking lubricates the eye, so blink more often.

Place the monitor at least at arm’s length. Make sure the top of the screen is at eye level so you’re not straining to look up or down. Reduce unnecessary glare and check your lighting. The worst problems comes from overhead lighting or from behind. Dust on the monitor may contribute to glare and reflection problems. Lastly, adjust the contrast and brightness on the monitor that is comfortable for you.

3. Poor circulation. Prolonged sitting can cause fatigue in your limbs, painful leg cramps or blood clots. Get up and move around, go for a 30 minute walk, do some light exercises or stretches for your arms, shoulders, neck, back and legs. Take a few deep breaths by inhaling slowly through the nose and exhaling through the mouth.

4. Forgetting to eat. Many people forget to eat while working on the computer. I can see why. Time just flies. Don’t skip those important meals because they give you energy and will carry you out throughout the day. If you have a daily planner, make sure you schedule a lunch break away from the computer. Drink lots of water to keep yourself hydrated.

5. Eating too much. And some people can’t stop eating. It’s like watching TV and you need something to munch on. You end up eating a lot more than necessary and thus adding extra unwanted pounds to your waistline. Eat your meals away from the computer and if you snack, make sure it’s healthy foods — raw veggies, low-fat yogurt and fruits.

How Address Label Software Has Revolutionized Business

Monday, May 12th, 2008

The introduction of mailing label software has helped a lot of people manage and organize information. This keeps the names and addresses of clients on file making it easier to get so that brochures and other product updates can be sent by mail.

Some companies will still prefer to type this in excel or word. It is only when the person has tried the address labeling software that one realizes that it is better than the latter.

This software was first intended for home use. The hands surely get tired writing the names and addresses for everyone when sending Christmas cards or invitations to a special event like a wedding.

Given that this is a problem that everyone faces, someone then came up with the idea of making the software program. In time, this has also been used in the office while others have used this to start a business.

It doesn’t take much to get started. The only thing needed is a computer; a printer and a CD that will cost together only around $30. The program should have various fonts, coloring and graphics to choose from so taking a little time to browse through is all it takes to find the right one.

If the user is satisfied with the draft, then it is time to print the labels. Stickered paper is much better since cutting it into smaller pieces and then using glue is quite messy.

But the address label software can also be used for other things. This can help organize the filing cabinets and the folders inside. If the employee works in a manufacturing facility, this can also be used to print barcodes.

The address labeling software is user-friendly. The person doesn’t have to attend a class to know how it works since anyone can master it through trial and error. It will really help a lot though by reading the manual that comes with the CD to be familiar with the basics of what this can do.

Address labeling software is compatible with either Windows or Macintosh. There are so many to choose from so the person can listen to what others think of it or try it out then make the judgment.

It is also possible to get the software online by paying for it using one’s credit card. Some developers even offer product updates that can also be downloaded into the computer. This will allow the user to make something new each time when sending out letters or arranging things in the office or at home.

It only takes a few minutes to do everything with the address labeling software. When the person has clicked on the printer button, the user can get up, have a cup of coffee then just wait for everything to be finished. This will surely maximize the individual’s time to be able to do other important things.

The program itself has revolutionized the way that labeling is done in the 21st century. No more alterations or throwing away paper when there is a mistake because this can be set in the machine before it starts printing away.

Address labeling software can do wonders for the person. You won’t realize the potential of what this thing can do (like saving time) unless you try it!

To find out more about address label software, visit the author’s site on label software.

History of Golf in Scotland

Sunday, May 11th, 2008

While many countries have a valid claim to an early game that resembles the game of golf, the origins of golf are without a doubt routed in Scotland’s past. The fact is, golf probably derived from other countries and stick and ball type games. However, while these are stick and ball games, they are missing that vital ingredient that is unique to golf. The hole. It was the Scots who introduced the golf hole into the game we now call golf.

Over the centuries, golf has evolved into the game it is today. The first recognizable form being played in Scotland in the early 1400’s. Andrews, Scotland is the birthplace of the game golf. Originating on the east coast of Scotland, golf quickly became the Scots’ national pastime and passion, bound forever to Scotland’s history and people.

According to Scottish lore, the people of Scotland believes that Golf was invented by Scottish fishermen to amuse themselves on the way home from fishing.

In 1457 golf was banned in Scotland because it interfered with the practice of archery, which was vital to the defense effort. The ban on golf had been issued in a time when Scotland was preparing to defend itself from the English. Scotland can say that they are the founding fathers in regards to the oldest golf course. It was in

Scotland that the passion for golf came alive. There is general agreement among historians and golf fans alike that the Scots were the first golfers who became somewhat addicted and passionate about the sport. In the very early days of golf, each golf group in Scotland produced their own and unique rules, which was sometimes the cause for interesting discussions. Golf is still a very popular game today in Scotland today.

The game of golf soon spread to areas outside of Scotland. In one form or another, the variant games of present day golf were clearly enjoyed throughout Europe in the Middle Ages. In fact in seventeenth century Dutch landscapes commonly show golf being played on ice. The game of golf began its destiny in time towards becoming popular around the world.

Sharapova Showed That She Has a Lot More to Give

Friday, May 9th, 2008

Maria Sharapova’s face after winning her first U.S Open trophy, Sharapova resembled a kid and not a professional player. Something unknown motivated her, and the 19 year old started jumping up and down with her prize, but her inexperience charged her, apparently she did not realized that this precious piece of hardware, unlike the platter she got for winning Wimbledon two years ago, comes in two pieces. So as expected, the top tumbled off and nicked her in the back of the head as she squeezed her eyes shut as if she was wishing to disappear.

She quickly recovered from that spontaneous moment and spent the rest of the short presentation in Arthur Ashe Stadium displaying camera. The margin between players was not that great. Henin-Hardenne who has made it to the finals in all four Grand Slams for this season and won the French Open, made several mistakes that gave Maria a room to win. She played too short, not aggressively enough and gave Sharapova too much time to put her game together.

Almost everything Sharapova does seems languid except for her searing ground strokes. Two years ago we knew she was not done, she had a lot more in her. This victory was the reward of a long preparation that have been taking place since she was a little girl. Her routine at the service line is the equivalent of a compulsive baseball player’s ritual at the plate. Now Sharapova has the right to say that her precocious victory at Wimbledon wasn’t an accident. Now all that remains to be seen is if she can handle being a champion.
